Mylan L. Denerstein is a litigation partner at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher’s New York office. She co-chairs the Public Policy Practice Group and is part of several others, including Crisis Management, White Collar Defense, and Securities Litigation. Mylan specializes in complex litigation and internal investigations, providing critical legal support to companies facing a variety of challenges. Renowned for her advocacy and problem-solving skills, she also serves as the global chair of the firm’s Diversity Committee and is a co-partner in charge of the New York office. Previously, she was on the firm’s Executive Committee.
In 2022, Mylan was appointed as the independent NYPD Monitor to oversee court-ordered reforms. Her extensive leadership experience includes roles as Counsel to the New York State Governor, Executive Deputy Attorney General, and Deputy Commissioner for Legal Affairs for the NYC Fire Department. She has also served as a federal prosecutor in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, where she handled complex securities and fraud prosecutions, eventually becoming Deputy Chief of the Criminal Division.
Mylan is recognized as a leading attorney in White-Collar Crime & Government Investigations by Chambers USA for 2024 and has been featured in Lawdragon’s “500 Leading Lawyers in America” since 2023. Benchmark Litigation named her to its “Top 250 Women in Litigation” lists for 2022-2024 and recognized her as a “Litigation Star” in Appellate, Securities, and White-Collar Crime. She was highlighted as a “Litigator of the Week” by The AmLaw Litigation Daily in July 2022 for successfully obtaining a sentence of no jail time for a prominent New York real estate developer. Mylan has also been named a “Global Leader” in the 2022 Who’s Who Legal Business Crime Defence Global guide and included in Crain’s New York Business’s lists for “Notable Black Leaders” and “Notable Women in Law” for 2022 and 2023. Additionally, she has been recognized in various diversity and law leadership lists by City & State New York and was one of New York Law Journal’s “Top Women in Law” in 2016.
Mylan has received several awards, including the 2020 “Diversity & Inclusion Champion Award” from the NYC Bar Association, the 2016 “Distinguished Public Service Award” from A Better Balance for her work on the Women’s Equality Act, and the 2015 “Professional Achievement Honor” from the Association of Black Women Attorneys.
Mylan is active in several professional organizations, including the Women’s White Collar Defense Association, the Association of Black Women Attorneys, and the National Bar Association. She also serves on the Boards of the American Red Cross of Greater New York, Sanctuary for Families, and the City Bar Fund of the NYC Bar Association.
Mylan graduated from Columbia Law School in 1993, where she was a Charles Evans Hughes Fellow and received the Jane Marks Murphy Prize.
