Since joining the firm after graduating from law school in 1979, Jeffrey Bloom has established himself as one of New York’s premier attorneys specializing in medical malpractice and personal injury cases. Known for his fierce advocacy, he has secured numerous multi-million dollar settlements for his clients.
Mr. Bloom has managed and litigated many serious personal injury cases, including medical malpractice, auto accidents, legal malpractice, construction accidents, and product liability, achieving some of the highest awards in the state. Recently, alongside partners Ben Rubinowitz and Richard Steigman, he won a $120 million jury verdict in a medical malpractice case against Westchester Medical Center. He also served as lead counsel for the Estate of Joan Rivers in a medical malpractice lawsuit related to her death following surgery at an ambulatory surgical center. His successful cases include those involving missed diagnoses of various cancers and claims of improper obstetrical care that resulted in significant injuries to mothers and newborns.
Some of his notable settlements include $9.2 million for a woman whose bowel obstruction was misdiagnosed, $8 million for a case of intestinal blockage post-colon surgery, and $6 million for a negligently performed heart valve surgery. Additionally, he secured a $4.5 million settlement for a woman who suffered a spinal fluid leak during gynecological surgery, among other significant cases. His expertise also extends to legal malpractice, where he has successfully handled several high-profile matters.
Beyond his casework, Mr. Bloom is Co-Chair of the Medical Malpractice Committee and LAWPAC for the New York State Trial Lawyers Association, where he advocates for changes in legislation to uphold justice for injured individuals. He was instrumental in the campaign for the 2018 passage of “Lavern’s Law,” which changed the statute of limitations for cancer malpractice cases to start when a patient discovers the malpractice. This reform addressed longstanding inequities faced by patients unaware of their conditions.
His excellence has earned him recognition from his peers, with consistent listings in Best Lawyers in America, New York Magazine’s Best Lawyers in New York across four specialties, as well as honors from Super Lawyers and induction into the International Academy of Trial Lawyers, which limits membership to 500 trial lawyers nationwide.
Jeffrey Bloom summarizes his commitment to his role, stating, “One of the most difficult events a person may ever encounter is being told that he or she has a serious illness such as cancer. Even more devastating, however, is the realization that the disease should have and could have been diagnosed earlier. As a medical malpractice attorney, my role is to prove this medical negligence to the jury with the ultimate goal of securing a substantial award as compensation for the losses suffered by our clients.”
He actively shares his expertise as a lecturer at the New York State Judicial Institute, educating State Supreme Court Judges, and has taught extensively throughout the state, including chairing programs for the New York State Bar Association on topics such as Anatomy and Medicine for Lawyers, Failure to Diagnose Breast Cancer, and Women’s Health Issues and Malpractice. He has also spoken at local hospitals to radiologists, emergency room residents, and neonatologists.
